John-Stuart Plant and Arthur Huynh share the 2025 Club Champs Honours
Dimitrios Stathos vs Huey Teng in their Round 9 game of the 2025 Club Champs, Division 5. Huey came second in the division, but Dimitri scored a draw in this encounter.
The final night of the Club Champs was a somewhat unusual affair with only 24 games played, 10 of which were draws. The turn-up was the upshot of a sudden power blackout across the train network, and this might even have affected the Division 1 outcome: Jeremy Plunkett was unable to make it and thus handed Arthur Huynh the point that allowed him to catch up to John-Stuart Plant. The high proportion of draws is typical of final rounds, and was particularly pronounced in the higher-rated divisions – ‘grandmaster draws’ perhaps. The Club Champs is always a highlight of the year, made all the more memorable by Charles’ epic newsletter coverage of every single game! The final epistle is in progress as I write, but in the meantime all the results and the tournament trophy winners can be viewed on the Results page! Congratulations to our new Club Champions, John-Stuart and Arthur, and to all the divisional winners!
St George Club Champs: Third Catch-up Night  Report
Update: Round 8 (plus catch-ups) results and games are on the Results page.
Nick Kordahi leads Division 2, with Ted Power, but Nick’s opponent on the third catch-up night, Vincent Qiang (and also John Huseyin) still have a chance of sharing the honours.
The third catch-up night was, as usual, the best attended of all three catch-ups, and with some of the ‘challengers’ doing well in their matches, there might seem to be only one division where the winner is already known: Division 3 with Netra Raj Bhatt sitting 1.5 points clear of the field. But advance or forfeit wins for Round 9 mean that Division 5 and 6 are also already settled. The divisional leaders (and possible challengers) after Round 8 and all catch-up games are: Division 4: Ashton Li (7/8). Still with chances: Paul Jovanoski (6); Division 7: Tom England & Dimitrios Gourlas  (7/8); Division 3: Netra Raj Bhatt (7/8) Outright winner!; Division 6:  Trilok Shenoy (7.5/8). Outright winner!; Division 5: Boris Paceskoski (6.5/8). Outright winner!;  Division 2: Ted Power & Nick Kordahi (6/8). Still with chances: Vincent Qiang (5.5) and Ertan John Huseyin (5.5); Division 1: John-Stuart Plant (6.5/8); Still with chances: Arthur Huynh (6) & FM Vu Ky Anh Nguyen (5.5).

Register for St George Club Teams Challenge June 10 – August 12
This is a 9-round team round-robin ACF-rated tournament, with games played under a classical time control: 75 mins each + 10s per move. There will be ten teams with at least five players in each, depending on the level of interest. The Club Captain (Charles Zworestine) places the players into teams such that each team has, ideally, an equal chance of winning the tournament. Within any one team, the players are sorted (by their ACF rating) to play at Board 1, or Board 2, or Board 3, and so on. On any given night, if you have been designated, for example, as a Board 3 player, you will play a single game against a Board 3 player from one of the other teams. Register here to join the tournament and come along next Tuesday (June 3) for social chess.
